The male children go mad. Nobody knows what their ancestors had done to justify such a punishment, but it was absolute. Theodore was reminded of this several times growing up, jumping at shadows in the corners of their little home, reminders of their former glory strewn about - an award here, a gift there, just enough to make him think he could be destined for something greater than the slow degeneration of his mind. His mother, he remembered as elegant and beautiful, young, married to a much older man. It had been a marriage arranged by the Dark Lord himself, two pureblood families bound by blood, sacrosanct in his eyes. But William Nott was abusive, neglectful, and his young wife too free, to willing to step out on her decrepit old husband. The day he caught her in bed with another man was the day he killed the pair of them. In front of the eight-year-old Theodore. This event taught Theodore to fear his father even more than his frequent beatings had. He knew he stood a heartbeat away from death. Theodore was fascinated by the killing, however, learning the curse his father had used and other dark magic, stored away in the recesses of his home, experimenting on cats and rats and birds and other small animals he found, watching their eyes pop and their blood boil with cool detachment. \\School Years// When Theodore started at Hogwarts, he met the one person that broke through that detachment. Draco Malfoy. In Theodore's mind, they were equals. Only children of powerful houses to be given places of honor when the Dark Lord reigned again. He watched Draco, from across the dorm room, across the Great Hall, across the classroom, the quidditch pitch, watched and watched. Oh, he was very circumspect - it all still came off as cool detachment unless you looked into his eyes and saw the black fires that burned there. There wasn't much of note during Theodore's six years with the exception of his obsession with the scion of the Malfoy family. He was above average academically, but nothing worth noting. He found ways to sneak into the Restricted Section to steal books on the Dark Arts. At sixteen, he was forced to join the Death Eaters. It was not something he had planned on doing, but he did not resist, if it was going to be a path to power. And besides, he knew Draco would, too. The reign of Snape and the Carrows really brought out his nasty streak. Though later he would claim he did not wish to hurt anyone, he enjoyed torturing his fellow students, though his reaction was always the same, the dead-eyed stare with which he administered their pain. After the war, he was spared Azkaban, unlike his father, when he claimed he'd been forced to join the Death Eaters on pain of death, and really, who would the Ministry believe? Big-eyed, innocent-looking Theodore, or his mad father? Now, Theodore's back at Hogwarts for a final year. He already feels his tenuous hold on reality slipping. The dream of Voldemort has collapsed, and Theodore has cast it aside. He is adrift, and uncertain. Even at Draco he looks askance, not certain what is in his mind - something he was convinced he always knew. | ||||||||||
